Deals Stuck in Your Pipeline? Here's Why
A pipeline full of deals that aren't moving isn't inventory, it's a warning. Why deals get stuck, and how to get them moving again.
A full pipeline feels secure. Until you realise half of those deals haven't moved in months. No 'no', no 'yes', just silence. A pipeline full of stuck deals isn't inventory; it's a warning.
#A Stuck Deal is Missing a Stage
Deals don't get stuck because the client is busy or it's inconvenient. They get stuck because a stage in the decision-making process wasn't completed. The client can't move forward because something crucial is missing internally.
Most often, it's the impact. The client doesn't feel the cost of doing nothing, so there's no reason to decide now. And without urgency, a decision always gets postponed. Indefinitely.
#The Silent Killer: The Half-Yes
Many deals get stuck on a half-yes. The client was enthusiastic, said something like, "This looks good, I'll get back to you," and you noted it as promising. But a 'yes' without a concrete follow-up appointment isn't a 'yes'; it's a polite pause. And in that pause, the deal cools down.
#How to Interpret a Stuck Deal
Don't look at how long the deal has been stalled, but where it stalled. Which stage was truly completed last? The problem lies before that.
Did the deal stall after the quote? Then the impact or value was likely missing before that. Did it stall after a good conversation? Then no concrete commitment or rhythm was ever agreed upon. The point where it stopped points back to the step you skipped.
#How to Get It Moving Again
Not with a follow-up that merely reiterates your offer. But by completing the missing stage. Don't call to ask if the client has decided; call to sharpen the impact or to understand who else is involved in the decision. Finish the conversation you never finished.
#What You Gain From This
A stuck deal isn't bad luck and isn't a lost cause. It's a diagnosis. Understand where it stalled, complete that stage, and the momentum will return.
